The Chicago White Sox are entering the 2026 season with a renewed sense of optimism and momentum, a stark contrast to their struggles just a year ago. Last season, they recorded an all-time low for losses in modern major league history. However, both general manager Chris Getz and manager Will Venable express confidence that the team is now in a significantly better position as they gear up for spring training.
Getz remarked, "I believe we are poised to make substantial progress this season." This sentiment was echoed by Venable, who highlighted the significance of the current atmosphere surrounding the franchise. "The excitement is palpable," he said. "The energy surrounding our team and the discussions we’re having indicate that we are genuinely moving in a positive direction."
During a recent visit to a Boys & Girls Club close to Rate Field, where the White Sox made a generous donation of $125,000 to support a visual and performing arts initiative, Getz and Venable shared their thoughts. As they prepare to head to Glendale, Arizona for spring training, where pitchers and catchers will kick off their first workout on February 10, they feel ready to build on last year’s progress.
The White Sox have been through a challenging period, suffering through three consecutive seasons with over 100 losses after finishing at a mediocre 81-81 in 2022. In Venable's inaugural season, the team ended with a record of 60-102, landing them at the bottom of the AL Central division. Yet, it is worth noting that this represented a notable improvement of 19 wins from the previous year, when the team posted a staggering 41-121 record, setting a franchise record for losses.
With a promising lineup of young talent, including shortstop Colson Montgomery, catcher Kyle Teel, and infielder Chase Meidroth, the organization believes they are ready to elevate their game. "These players have gone through a lot, which will give us an advantage as we approach the season," Getz explained. "Their accumulated experience will boost our confidence, especially as we look forward to integrating new talent during spring training. We aim to provide them with opportunities to thrive, as some of these players haven't had the chance to shine elsewhere for various reasons. We plan to capitalize on that potential."
Venable emphasized the importance of embracing heightened expectations for the team. "Every manager in Major League Baseball aspires to elevate their club to new heights. If our players already believe they can succeed, it certainly simplifies my role. I must guide them on what steps are necessary to reach that level of performance."
In an effort to enhance their chances of success, the White Sox made several strategic moves during the offseason, notably signing Japanese power hitter Munetaka Murakami in December and trading center fielder Luis Robert Jr. to the New York Mets last week. In return, they acquired speedy infielder Luisangel Acuña and minor league pitcher Truman Pauley.
Additionally, the White Sox utilized the financial flexibility gained from the Robert trade to secure right-handed pitcher Seranthony Domínguez with a two-year contract worth $20 million. This agreement was finalized on Thursday.
Domínguez, who debuted with the Philadelphia Phillies in 2018, has an impressive resume, tallying 40 saves and a 3.50 ERA over 322 games with the Phillies, Baltimore Orioles, and Toronto Blue Jays. He is expected to take on closing duties for the White Sox. Last season, he posted a 4-4 record with a 3.16 ERA and two saves in 67 appearances, having been traded to Toronto on July 29.
With playoff experience in each of the last four years, including participating in 12 postseason games for Toronto—where he played a crucial role in their AL pennant win before falling to the Los Angeles Dodgers in the World Series—and competing in the World Series with Philadelphia in 2022, Domínguez brings invaluable experience to the table. "He is eager to return to the playoffs and is accustomed to high-pressure situations," Venable noted. "His extensive experience in significant games will be instrumental in guiding our younger players as they establish their routines and navigate the challenges ahead."
