Queensland Cyclone Alert: Heavy Rainfall & Flood Warnings - What You Need to Know (2026)

Get ready for a potential tropical cyclone off Queensland's northeast coast, bringing heavy rainfall and a whole lot of uncertainty!

The Bureau of Meteorology (BOM) has updated its forecast, now saying there's a moderate chance of a tropical low developing into a cyclone over the weekend. And here's where it gets controversial: earlier, they had increased the warning to high, but now they're backtracking a bit.

A severe weather warning has been issued for a huge area, stretching from Cooktown to Hamilton Island, including major towns like Townsville, Bowen, and Cairns. The system is predicted to make landfall near Townsville late on Saturday or early Sunday, and it's expected to dump a lot of rain over a large area.

Senior meteorologist Harry Clark warns that the impacts will be widespread, not just near the center of the system. He says isolated areas between Townsville and Cairns could see over 350 millimeters of rain in 24 hours, which could lead to life-threatening flash floods.

And this is the part most people miss: regardless of whether it becomes a full-blown cyclone, the tropical low will still bring heavy rainfall and damaging winds to the coastline and adjacent inland areas. So, it's not just about the cyclone classification; it's about being prepared for severe weather either way.

The BOM forecasts wind gusts of over 90 kilometers per hour along the coastal fringe from Friday onwards.

Cairns residents are getting ready for whatever comes their way. Local disaster coordinator Rhys Newton says staff are well-prepared, but the community needs to be too. He warns of surface flooding, especially in areas like Babinda, due to predicted rainfall of up to 200 millimeters.

With catchment areas already saturated, rivers like the Russell and Mulgrave are rising, which could cut off places like Gordonvale. Moderate flood warnings are in place for these rivers, and a broad flood watch has been issued for coastal rivers between Daintree and Pioneer, as well as the Cape York Peninsula.

Residents and visitors are being asked to conserve water, using it only for essential purposes like drinking, cooking, and bathing, due to high turbidity in the Freshwater Creek catchment caused by heavy rain. The Cairns Regional Council has declared level 4 water restrictions, urging residents to stop watering gardens, washing vehicles, or filling pools for now.

And this is where the uncertainty comes in: communities in the northwest are bracing for more rainfall, even as some towns are still isolated with lingering floodwaters. Meteorologist Harry Clark says there's a lot of uncertainty about where the rainfall will occur over the coming days. While they can't rule out more rain over flooded areas in the west, it's just too unpredictable to narrow down the focus of heavy rainfall.

Some models suggest it'll move further northwest towards the Gulf of Carpentaria, while others take it into central Queensland. So, it's a waiting game for these communities, many of whom, like Mikaylah King at Cremona Station near Julia Creek, have been struggling to feed and protect their livestock from the wet conditions.

Major flood warnings remain in place for the Flinders River, with moderate flooding also occurring at Richmond and on the Norman and Georgina Rivers.

So, there you have it: a potential tropical cyclone, heavy rainfall, and a whole lot of uncertainty. What do you think? Are you prepared for severe weather events like these? Share your thoughts and experiences in the comments below!
