Beach Hut Owners in Mudeford Face a Stirring Debate Over Council Tax Rise

Beach hut owners in Mudeford, Dorset, are up in arms over a proposed council tax hike, which they argue is unfairly targeting their beloved wooden sheds. The Bournemouth Christchurch and Poole Council (BCP) has plans to reclassify these beach huts as second homes, a move that could result in a significant increase in council tax for the owners. But here's where it gets controversial...

The council's finance councillor, Mike Cox, justifies the move as a necessary step to tackle a £9 million budget shortfall. He claims that the council is scrutinizing every detail to find ways to increase revenue. However, the Mudeford Sandbanks Beach Hut Association (MSBHA) strongly disagrees, arguing that the beach huts are more like basic wooden sheds with limited amenities. They claim that the council has not invested in these facilities for years, and now they are being hit with a substantial tax increase.

The 344 beach huts in question can only be used overnight for part of the year, yet they are valued at hundreds of thousands of pounds. The proposed change would mean that owners would have to pay full council tax, which, based on the 2025/26 charge for band A properties, would increase from £618 to £1,236 a year. This is on top of the fact that owners have already seen their annual fees nearly triple to over £5,200 as the council harmonizes charges along the coast.

MSBHA chair Darren Pridwell expressed his frustration, stating that the owners might understand the increased costs if the level of services were acceptable, but the lack of investment in facilities is a major concern. He believes that the council is being unfair and that the owners are being asked to pay more without receiving adequate services or improvements.

The proposal will be discussed by the cabinet on January 14th, and it remains to be seen whether the council will go ahead with the plan. But this issue has already sparked a heated debate among beach hut owners and residents alike. So, what do you think? Is the council being fair to beach hut owners, or are they being unfairly targeted with this council tax rise? Share your thoughts in the comments below!
