Can you believe it? Even with a fantastic LEGO set celebrating the iconic Game Boy, fans are making a common mistake! It seems like the passage of time, roughly 35 years since Nintendo released the original portable console, has blurred the memory of what those classic cartridges actually looked like.
The LEGO Game Boy set, a popular gift released late last year, has been popping up all over social media. But eagle-eyed fans are noticing a recurring error in the builds.
The set includes two non-playable cartridges that slot into the Game Boy, just like the real thing. Each cartridge has a long piece that mimics the offset indent found on the original game cartridges. This design made it easier to pull the games out of the Game Boy.
But here's where it gets controversial... If you've never held a real Game Boy or are just going by memory, you might place that final piece in the center of the cartridge. It seems logical, right? However, this is where the mistake lies. Dedicated LEGO enthusiasts have been issuing friendly public service announcements (PSAs) to correct this common error. Discussions on platforms like Reddit reveal many builders, even those who grew up with the Game Boy, initially made the same mistake.
One commenter admitted, "I put it in the center for my first cart, then noticed the proper placement when making the second cart. I didn’t have a Game Boy growing up so didn’t know that was what the carts were supposed to look like." Another frustrated fan declared on Facebook, "So far, on every [Game Boy] post I've seen the cartridges are being built wrong. Please stop [centralizing] the top tile and offset it so that it has the notch the original GB games have."
And this is the part most people miss... Some fans are surprised by the corrections, while others are grateful for the information. But, the mistake isn't entirely their fault. Even the LEGO box itself has a picture that incorrectly depicts the cartridges!
What do you think? Is this a minor detail, or does it matter to get the build correct? Let us know your thoughts in the comments!
