Golden Grizzlies Dominate Horizon League Championships Day 1 | Oakland Swimming & Diving (2026)

The Golden Grizzlies' Splash: A League Championship Odyssey

The stage is set in Indianapolis for an exhilarating swim meet! The Oakland Golden Grizzlies swimming and diving teams dove into the Horizon League Championships, aiming to make waves and defend their league title. And what a start it was! On the first day, they left their competitors in a splash of glory, securing a top-three spot in every event and setting new league and school records.

But here's where it gets exciting:

200 Medley Relay

The women's relay team, a blend of youth and experience, showcased their potential. Led by sophomore Grace Albrecht, the young squad, including fellow sophomore Maya Dobry and freshmen Lydia Soldatke and Avery Beal, touched the wall in third place with a time of 1:40.77, a whisker away from the champions. A promising start for the newcomers!

The men's team, featuring seniors Christopher Palvadre, Micah Scheffer, and Charles Brown, alongside freshman Ajjuub Ezzat, secured second place in a thrilling race. They finished in 1:24.85, narrowly missing the top spot, which was claimed by IU Indianapolis in a surprising upset.

Women's Three-Meter Dive

Senior Victoria Sanders and sophomore Elizabeth Woollcott shone in the diving prelims, securing their spots in the finals. Sanders, a consistent performer, led the way with an impressive 304.75 points. In the finals, she solidified her reputation, claiming third place with 258.10 points, continuing her streak of top-four finishes at the championships.

800 Free Relay

Oakland's swimmers truly made a splash in this event! The women's team, comprising seniors Erika Pietras and Mia Englender, and sophomores Kelley Hassett and Viviane Partridge, dominated the race, winning in 7:18.47. This victory was made sweeter as the team improved upon their previous year's performance, where they placed third.

And the men's team? They wrote their names in the record books! Seniors Nicholas Karel Subagyo and Harry Nicholson, along with juniors Max Haney and Joseph Countryman, not only won the relay but also shattered the previous league and school record by a remarkable two seconds. A historic moment for the Golden Grizzlies!

With such a stellar start, the Golden Grizzlies lead the standings on both the men's and women's sides. The men have accumulated 74 points, while the women sit pretty with 103 points.

But the real question is, can they maintain this momentum?
