Ellen Roome's Story: Mother's Fight for Social Media Accountability After Son's Death (2026)

A mother's relentless quest for answers regarding her son's tragic death has taken a dramatic turn, as her heartfelt journey is set to be transformed into a television drama.

Ellen Roome, hailing from Cheltenham, has dedicated herself to advocating not only for answers about her son Jools' passing in 2022 but also for other grieving parents facing similar struggles. An official inquest concluded that her 14-year-old son died by suicide; however, Ellen suspects that his death was the result of a hazardous online challenge.

Her efforts to hold social media platforms accountable have piqued the interest of television producers, who are now working on bringing her poignant story to the screen. "You see a strong figure on various media advocating for legal changes and enhanced online safety for children," Ellen expressed, reflecting on her public persona. "But that narrative doesn’t reveal the personal struggles— the immense heartbreak, the feeling of hopelessness, and eventually finding the strength to rise up and say, 'I’m going to fight for answers.'"

In the aftermath of her son's death, Ellen was taken aback by the challenges parents face in accessing their deceased children's social media accounts. She worries that critical information regarding Jools' online interactions might vanish because data isn’t preserved automatically.

In light of this, she has initiated a campaign for what she terms "Jools' Law." This proposed legislation aims to ensure that children's online data is automatically retained whenever a death is reported, that such data is accessible to coroners, and that there are established procedures in place to guarantee that parents and authorities do not miss out on significant data.

In December, it was announced that Ellen had entered into a life-rights agreement with Featuristic Films, a London-based production company. While no script has yet been written, her story has the potential to be adapted for the screen in the near future. Moreover, her pursuit of justice is also being documented for a separate film project.

In an Instagram post, Featuristic Films expressed their gratitude and honor in collaborating with Ellen. They are currently developing a pilot episode aimed at portraying "a mother’s bravery, her quest for truth, her battle for change, and a campaign that could safeguard numerous children worldwide" in a six-part series.

Ellen candidly noted, "This journey will be incredibly challenging since I will have to revisit all those painful moments— the days when simply getting out of bed felt impossible." Yet, her ultimate goal remains clear: she wants to ensure that no parent ever has to endure such a strenuous fight to comprehend the circumstances surrounding their child's death.

During a recent interview with BBC Radio Gloucestershire, Ellen revealed that two specialized investigators she hired had discovered new leads, which have since been reported to Gloucestershire Police. The police department confirmed that a small team would investigate this new information, adhering to an agreement with Jools' parents to thoroughly explore any potential leads.

A spokesperson for the government stated that the Online Safety Act mandates companies to cooperate fully and share data when there is evidence linking a child’s death to their social media use. "We have further reinforced this by empowering coroners to require platforms to immediately preserve pertinent data, ensuring that crucial evidence cannot be deleted," they added. "We will keep a close eye on these powers and will take action if the evidence indicates a need for stronger measures."
